Martinet de nit violaci (Nyctanassa violacea)
Començo el meu viatge a Guayaquil, la segona (alguns diuen que la primera) ciutat més important del país. En el que tots els ecuatorians vaig comprovar que estaven d'acord és en que és la ciutat més important del país en delinqüència. Deu minuts després de sortir de l'hostal, un tio m'apunta amb una pistola i em diu "El selular". Jo diria que la pistola era de nyigui-nyogui, però no em vaig parar a comprovar-ho.
This picture, in Guayaquil's promenade, is the first photo I took in this trip. No, that's not true: I had taken the first picture with my cell phone, but I was robbed and left without. I can say I was quite lucky, firstly because I was also carrying my digital camera, but the robber was in a hurry and didn't ask what I had in my little backpack. And also, because if you have to be robbed it's better to have this unforgetable experience when you have no pictures of the trip yet in your mobile.
Frigil plumbi (Phrygilus unicolor)
Com us podeu imaginar, vaig fugir com un desesperitat de Guayaquil. Em vaig dedicar a visitar volcans, lluny de pistoles i misèria. A la falda del Cotopaxi vaig trobar-me aquesta simpàtica ocella, una frigila plúmbia. El mascle és tot gris uniforme. La femella és més resultona.
Plumbeous sierra-finch
Plumbeous means that it is the colour of lead. But only males are. Sierra means mountain range. Yes, all of a sudden I am in the middle of the Andes. Even though I had planned a couple of days in Guayaquil, I wasn't there for even one full calendar day! Understandable, after being pointed at with a gun for the first time in my life!

No sabeu fins a quin punt em vaig sentir identificat amb un bitxo que estava de merda fins als turmells. I plovent.
In my opinion, the most awesome thing about the Cotopaxi NP is not the volcano itself, but a huge plateau at 4000 m above sea level. On it I found this caracara, an amazing falconid.
Vicunya (Vicugna vicugna)
Visitar el Chimborazo és obligat si aneu a l'Ecuador: sereu a la muntanya més alta del món! El diàmetre de la Terra a l'equador és 43 km més llarg que als pols degut a la força centrífuga. Aquesta diferència fa que el cim del Chimborazo estigui més allunyat del centre del planeta que el cim de l'Everest, de molt: al lloc on vaig veure aquesta vicunya ja estava més elevat que l'Everest, no cal fer el cim.
You will see many vicuñas, a wild relative of the domestic llama, if you visit the Chimborazo. And you will also see what Ecuadorians call "the closest place to the Sun": the summit of the volcano is the highest point on the entire Earth's crust!
Colibrí courenc (Aglaeactis cupripennis)
Després de visitar els Andes, vaig reunir-me amb uns amics (un català i una colombiana en lluna de mel) i vam anar cap a l'est dels país: a l'Amazònia.

We are now a group of three: I joined (or they joined me) a just-married Catalan-Colombian couple. We rented a car and we drove east to the Amazon rain forest.
Colibrí de carpó daurat (Urochroa leucura)

Colibrí becfalçat cuaverd (Eutoxeres aquila)
Si els colibrís, entre altres coses, són flipants pels seus becs, aquest és dalinià: sembla que el bec se li estigui desfent.
White-tipped sicklebill
Following the mathematical description of the curve of its bill, this hummingbird stuck its tongue out at the very moment I was taking the picture, making a perfect half circle that would drive to bankruptcy any compasses factory.

Semblant al nostre picot verd, però més mono i fa els forats a les palmeres.
Spot-breasted woodpecker
In Europe the only place where it makes sense to place a hide or an observation tower is in a wetland. I took this picture from an elevated hide in the Amazon jungle, and the spectacle of birds and monkeys was non-stop. We spent some hours in the tower and we were always busy.
Mona aranya de pèl llarg (Ateles belzebuth)
Vam veure quatre espècies de primats a l'Ecuador. Aquesta mona (se'm faria estrany dir mona a un mascle, per molt que el nom de l'espècie sigui femení, però és que aquesta mona de la foto era una femella) era la que menys es movia i es va deixar fotografiar bé.
As I said, we saw many monkeys from that observation tower. The funniest and cutest ones were the tamarins. But the most fascinating one was this spider-monkey. Firstly because, a couple of times, it hung upside down just by its tail! Hence its name. And secondly for its human gaze. It could be Rodin's thinker.
Dacnis blava (Dacnis cayana)
Veure ocells tropicals té l'inconvenient que quan tornes a Europa els ocells et semblen molt apagats.
This is a female, males are the blue ones.
Guan andí (Penelope montagnii)
Prop de Quito vaig entrar a una botigueta on em volien vendre guants andins, fets de llana d'alpaca (un parent domèstic de la vicunya). Tot i que feia fred (encara que estiguem a l'Ecuador i prop de l'equador, som a milers de metres d'altitud) no vaig comprar guants andins perquè tinc molt mal record dels jerseis de llana (d'ovella, en aquest cas) que em feien portar els meus pares de petit, perquè picaven. Prefereixo els guans andins, tan macos com la Penelope Cruz.
Pichincha is the province to which the capital is Quito, and the province is named after the volcano Pichincha, next to which we saw this impressive guan and its partner.
Punxaflors emmascarat (Diglossa cyanea)
Si us hi fixeu bé veureu que la punta del bec d'aquests ocells acaba en una punxa afilada cap avall. Punxen la base de les flors i d'aquesta manera tenen accés al néctar.
Adults have a mask and a black bill. This is a young one.
Zopilot negre (Coragyps atratus)
Finalment arribem a Quito, la capital del país. La ciutat està presidida per una gran estàtua que hi ha dalt d'un turó. El turó és molt arrodonit, com un panet, i per això l'estàtua s'anomena la Virgen del Panecillo. El dia que vam pujar a veure l'estàtua de prop, un zopilot va posar-se al dit de la verge, com imitant l'esperit sant. Igual que l'Antonio Machín, jo demanaria als pintors d'art sacre que fessin algun zopilot negre de tant en tant, si sabéis que en el sielo también los quiere Dios.

Mussol de les Galápagos (Asio galapagoensis)
A Quito ens reunim amb quatre catalans més, dos estatunidencs, un anglès i una panamenya i agafem un vol cap a les Galápagos. I quina sort que vam tenir que quan portavem cinc minuts amb els prismàtics penjats vam veure aquest mussol i no el vam tornar a veure més en la resta dels deu dies que vam ser a l'arxipèlag.
It has not been split yet from the short-eared owl, but the point of this subspecies is that, contrary to all the other subspecies of short-eared owl, it doesn't migrate. The whole population always stays in the archipelago, so I anticipate events and I already consider it a separate species, for dramatic purposes.

Swallow-tailed gull
In the islet of Seymour Norte we saw (we are a party of eleven people in the Galapagos, as we have been joined by a couple from Passadena (California), four Catalans, a Panamenian lady and an Englishman) a colony of this gull, endemic to the Galapagos.
Lleó marí de les Galápagos (Zalophus wollebaeki)
Les dues foques que hi ha a les Galápagos són endèmiques, i tenen noms molt peliculeros (l'altre es diu ós marí).
Galapagos sea lion
You can find them anywhere, as you can see in the first picture. We found some of them lying on street benches or walking between markets stalls,... They are almost always sleeping. In the second picture a young one has a nap on solidified lava. I saw a guy with a T-shirt with a sea lion that read "Serial chiller". In the third picture you can see a mother with her newborn pup, the stairs are still full of blood and on the right you can see the placenta.
Iguana marina
Es tracta d'un endemisme de les Galápagos, i per tant es podria anomenar iguana de les Galápagos, però és que la gràcia d'aquesta iguana és que és l'únic saure que neda pel mar i que buceja i que s'alimenta només d'algues. Ara bé, més del 90% les vam veure prenent el sol, només unes quantes nedant i cap bucejant.
Marine iguana

The iguana in the second photo loves as much as I do walking on solidified lava. In the third photo we can see the Española island subspecies, which is the pinkest one.
Fregata magnífica (Fragata magnificens)
Quan era petitet a casa hi havia un llibre (que em sembla que el regalava alguna caixa o banc, perquè molta gent el tenia) que es deia El fascinante mundo de las aves o alguna cosa semblant (sabeu quin vull dir? Que a la portada hi sortia un picot) i en una de les pàgines hi sortia una fregata amb al sac gular vermell inflat i jo no entenia què era allò, si un globus que algun bromista li havia posat, si una fruita que s'estava menjant... en tot cas em semblava una cosa superexòtica que jo mai veuria amb els meus ulls.
In the islet of Seymour Norte we walked among this nesting colony of both species of fregatebirds present in the Galapagos: the magnificient fregatebird and the great fregatebird. What grandiose names, huh? They are well deserved, for, to me, they are one of the most fascinating birds in the world. In the first picture a male has his gular pouch inflated to attract females. In the second picture you can see the island of Santa Cruz (the second largest island in the Galapagos and where the most populated town (Puerto Ayora) in the archipelago is found) in the background.
Sargantana de les Galápagos (Microlophus albemarlensis)
Hi ha unes quantes sargantanes endèmiques a les Galápagos, aquesta és la més extesa i es troba a les quatre illes més grans.
This one, with orange in her head, is a female. Males don't have any orange.
Ocell de tempesta de les Galápagos (Hydrobates tethys)
Hi ha més ocells de tempesta de les Galápagos en aquesta imatge que tots els ocells de tempesta europeus que he vist en tota la meva vida. Podeu ampliar la imatge en tres passos: 1) cliqueu la imatge 2) cliqueu la nova imatge amb el botó dret del ratolí i seleccioneu "Open image in new tab" 3) cliqueu la nova imatge.
Hundreds or thousands of them were breeding in this little islet (which is about three or four times bigger than the section you see in the picture). Then we jumped off the boat and we swam close to the islet. If you reached your hand to the sky you could almost touch the petrels that were flying all over. Under the water we saw green turtles and sea lions also at very close range, and fish of all colours. The magic of the Galapagos.
Pinsà de Darwin mitjà (Geospiza fortis)
De pinsans de Darwin en vam veure 12 espècies diferents, i encara n'hi ha més! Totes són molt semblants, així que per no avorrir-vos us en poso només una per a què us feu una idea de la pinta que tenen.

The famous Darwin finches are not finches! I mean, they are not fringillids, they belong to the same family as the tanagers.

En canvi, els tres mascarells que hi ha a les Galápagos són molt diferents entre si, així que us els poso tots tres amb finalitats didàctiques.
Blue-footed booby
They are very cool, aren't they? Well, you should know they commonly practise siblicide (killing of brother/sister) if food is scarce.
Mascarell de Grant (Sula granti)
Hi ha un pinsà de Darwin que no vam veure perquè es troba a l'illa de Darwin, a la qual no vam anar perquè és la que queda més allunyada. L'ocell (que es podria anomenar pinsà de Darwin de Darwin), es diu pinsà de Darwin vampir, perquè s'alimenta de sang de mascarells!
Nazca booby
They say booby comes from the Spanish word "bobo" (stupid, silly), because when the first Europeans got to the Galapagos they could catch the boobies just by reaching their hands, as there were no humans or predators in the islands. Well, as you can see, I took these pictures at very close range.
Mascarell cama-roig (Sula sula)
A diferència dels altres dos mascarells, que els vèiem cada dia i en diferents illes, aquest només el vam veure un dia en una colònia de cria que hi ha al nord de l'illa de San Cristóbal.
This is a brown adult. Some adults are white.
Aligot de les Galápagos (Buteo galapagoensis)
A l'illa Española vam veure aquest niu amb un adult i un poll crescudet.
In each island the Galapagos hawk has a slightly different size. In Española it is the largest Buteo in the world.
Gavina de lava (Leucophaeus fuliginosus)
Una gavina del mateix color que la lava solidificada. Darrere seu un pelicà bru (Pelecanus occidentalis) adult. Darrere seu un pelicà bru jove. I darrere seu tot de crancs en una roca. No en tinc ni idea de crancs, però alguns crancs de les Galápagos són al·lucinants, de color i de mida.
Lava gull
This gull, also endemic to the Galapagos, is the rarest gull in the world: less than 500 pairs breed in the four biggest islands.

Potser l'ocell més bonic que es pot veure a les Galápagos. No cal dir per què, el seu nom ho explica.
Red-billed tropicbird
It's a pitty that probably the most beautiful bird in the Galapagos was difficult to see well: it was always flying and always far away, and there were not many of them.
Mim d'Española (Mimus macdonaldi)
Hi ha varis mims endèmics a les Galápagos. Aquest ho és d'Española (l'illa més antiga (4 milions d'anys) i més meridional de les Galápagos). Sabeu el llibre i la pel·lícula "Matar a un ruiseñor"? Doncs el seu títol original és "To kill a mockingbird", que són aquests ocells i no pas els rossinyols!
This is the most hated bird in Catalonia: it's Spanish and it's a McDonald's fan!! Just mocking.
Garsa de mar americana (Haematopus palliatus)
No tot són endemismes a les Galápagos. També hi ha ocells continentals que van a passar-hi unes vacances inoblidables.
On a beach in Isabella (the biggest island in the Galapagos) we found this father, mother and child looking for oysters and enjoying the best holidays of their lives, just like us.
