Còlit de pit negre (Oenanthe pleschanka)
Com que em vaig llevar ben d'hora, ben d'hora, vaig poder entrar al cap Kaliakra (NE de Bulgària) sense pagar. A partir de les 9 fan passar per taquilla i les fotos dels còlits ja no donarien la mateixa satisfacció a un català: donarien còlits nefrítics.
Pied wheatear If you ever go to Bulgaria don't miss Kaliakra Cape: spectacular views of the Black Sea from a 4th century Thracian fortress. As soon as you hit the fortification pied wheatears pop up all over the place. When you leave the fortification the wheatears are nowhere to be seen, which means they really are keen archeologists. I think I saw one of them with a hat and a whip.
Gripau raucador de ventre groc (Bombina variegata)
Em vaig enganxar als amfibis i als rèptils quan feia primer de BUP (el que avui seria tercer d'ESO) de la mà del meu company de taula (sèiem en taules de dos). En qüestió de setmanes em vaig aficionar a l'herpetologia amb tanta passió com ell. Em vaig comprar la guia Omega dels amfibis i rèptils d'Europa i em vaig apendre totes les espècies, tots els noms científics, etc. (avui en dia els noms científics ja no em queden amb la mateixa facilitat, l'edat no perdona!) La qüestió és que uns amfibis que ens fascinaven especialment, tant a ell com a mi, eren els Bombina, per la coloració de la seva panxa: una espècie tenia la panxa amb taques vermelles llampants i l'altra amb taques grogues estridents. Però aquests gripauets estaven "a Europa" i no els podíem veure en cap de les herpetosortides que fèiem per Catalunya. Trenta-dos anys han passat fins que finalment he bimbat el de ventre groc! Queda pendent el de ventre de foc. Ja caurà en un altre viatge.

degrees east. However, I took this picture some days later, in a forest near Pejë, in the east of Kosovo, where I found half a dozen yellow-bellied toads in a creek.
Serp d'aigua tessel·lada (Natrix tessellata)
Us heu preguntat mai què vol dir el cognom de la Carmen Maura? És d'origen irlandès i vol dir "de l'aigua". La noia Almodóvar té una germana reptiliana anomenada Natrix maura, una serp d'aigua força comuna a Catalunya i que és el que em vaig pensar que era aquesta serp en veure-la. Però no. Així com la Carmen Maura és un producte típicament espanyol, la Natrix maura també. Si aneu a Europa de l'est i veieu una serp nedant no és la maura sinó la tessellata. Aquesta vegada no us poso una simple foto: dirigint cual Almodóvar, us deixo amb una serp al borde de un ataque de serbios!
Dice snake
The story is surprinsinly similar to that of the yellow-bellied toad: I first saw two of these in a pond of a park of the capital of a country! The contry was Serbia and the city Belgrade. And I also can give you the coordinates of the pond in case you ever visit Belgrade: 44.782902 N, 20.437980 E. Like in the case of the toads, I couldn't take any picture of the first two that I saw: I shot this video some days after in a forest's creek. I am not making any of this up, it's amazing how the two cases resemble each other!
Tortuga d'estany (Emys orbicularis)
El delta del Danubi és la zona humida més important d'Europa: milions d'ocells i altres animals en un delta de la mida de la província de Girona. Pelicans comuns, pelicans cresps i corbmarins pigmeus els teniu assegurats. El que vaig bimbar-hi jo, i malgrat l'alegria del bimbo també s'ha de dir que és força trist, és la tortuga d'estany. Dic que és trist perquè és una espècie que es troba a Catalunya però que les seves poblacions estan tan malament al nostre país que jo mai n'havia vist cap. Al delta del Danubi, en canvi, en vaig veure unes quantes.

Falcó cama-roig (Falco vespetinus) mascle
Això no va ser bimbo (el falcó cama-roig el vaig bimbar el 2015 als aiguamolls de l'Empordà), però és que de cap dels bimbos que vaig fer a Hongria (tallarol esparverenc, boscarla mostatxuda,...) en tinc cap foto bona i volia posar una foto de cada un dels set països que vaig visitar en aquest viatge, i aquesta és la foto més guapa que vaig fer a Hongria. Queien quatre gotes i el cel fa joc amb el falcó.
One of the lifers I ticked in Hungary was the green woodpecker, can you believe it? Well, neither can I. I have seen hundreds of green woodpeckers in my life, but the experts say now that the Iberian ones are a different species. Thus, when I saw a green woodpecker in Hungary I was supposed to cry hurray, be very happy and take lots of pictures of it. Guess what. I didn't bother to take any picture of it. I was much more awed by this non-lifer I saw the same day, the cutest of the falcons. With all due respect for green woodpeckers.
Sargantana de musell punxegut (Dalmatolacerta
oxycephala)
Em permeto la llibertat de batejar aquesta sargantana en català, a partir del seu nom en anglès (sharp-snouted rock lizard) i en castellà (lagartija de hocico puntiagudo). Puc triar entre morro i musell: de morro en sobra molt en aquest món, si una paraula hem de salvar de l'extinció és musell. Puc triar entre afilat i punxegut: afilat em sembla una exageració, segur que aquesta sargantana no et pot fer un tall al dit només amb el musell, és a dir, segur que no et talla pel morro! Així doncs, germana, en el nom del pare, del fill i de l'esperit sant jo et batejo sargantana de musell punxegut, amén.
This is the coolest lizard I saw in the trip, look at the design of its body and its tail. And I saw it in one of the coolest places in Croatia: the Dalmatian islands. There are more than one thousand islands in Croatia, seventy of them inhabited. I visited (by boat, in a single day, from Dubrovnik) three of the inhabited ones: Kolocep,
Sipan and Lopud. In all of them I saw sharp-snouted rock lizards. They are also present in the continent, but I didn't manage to see any there.
Sit capnegre (Emberiza melanocephala) mascle
Aquí també estic fent una mica de trampes, perquè, de fet, el sit capnegre va ser el primer bimbo del viatge, no pas l'últim! Però a Montenegro l'únic bimbo que vaig fer va ser el tritó alpí, i no en tinc cap foto convincent: a dins de l'aigua (que és on estaven) les fotos no han quedat bé, i a fora de l'aigua (que en vaig agafar un) han quedat massa artificials. Però bé, posant el sit arrodoneixo l'entrada del blog: set països, set bitxos.
I traveled, in about 90% of the trip, by hitchhiking (with some exceptions, for example when it was raining or when, for some reason, I was in a hurry). You have to try, while nobody picks you up, not to waste your time. This is done by walking along the road. This way, you see the landscape, you cross villages, you take pictures, and, from time to time, you tick a lifer! That was the case with the black-headed bunting. I was walking and hitchhiking in Bulgaria when I saw a male singing on top of a bush. I had time to look at it with my binoculars and identify it, but I had no time to take a picture of it. He flew away. Damn it.
No problem: two months later, in Montenegro, I managed to take this picture of another male.
