Cocodril marí (Crocodilus porosus)
El títol de l'entrada és una mica enganyós: ni vaig estar només a l'hemisferi sud ni vaig estar a tot arreu de l'hemisferi sud! Vaig estar a Singapur (que està un grau per sobre l'equador), Papua Nova Guinea i Australia (aquests dos països sí que són a l'hemisferi austral). Comencem, doncs, per Singapur i anem baixant.

Varà aquatic (Varanus salvator)
Aquest rèptil també va per l'aigua (el de la foto nedava pel mar, però també en vaig veure nedant per aigua dolça) però, en canvi, és inofensiu. I lo que fa més gràcia és que es diu com jo!
Asian water monitor
In this trip I visited Singapore (first 7 pictures), Papua New Guinea (next 3 pictures) and Australia (last 19 pictures), but I didn't want to name the post with a list of countries: 'Southern hemisphere' sounds better and it was the first time in my life that I crossed the equator, so it had to be reflected somehow in the title!

Oi que no sabíeu que en català hi ha paraules que s'escriuen amb essa hac? L'any 2022 el Termcat ha acabat de posar nom a tots els ocells del món, i hi ha dotze espècies que s'anomenen shames.

Enough of swimming reptiles. Let's see now a flying reptile. Yes, my friends, birds are no more than a group of reptiles. This one was not in the main island of Singapore but in the island of Sentosa, reachable by a for free litle train that runs above the water.

Si no aneu en compte al conduir per Singapur podeu atropellar un mico. Però quasi ningú té cotxe a Singapur: a tot arreu s'hi arriba amb metro. Metros que van sense conductor. Un país futurista.
It's true that the food in Singapore is crap: spaghetti in soup is all that there is. So the poor macaques are forced to eat that. Oh, sorry, it's crab they eat. That's much better.
Colugo malai (Galeopterus variegatus)
Els colugos són uns dermòpters planejadors que fan uns salts de fins a 100 metres pel mig del bosc tropical! Això sona molt espectacular, però resulta que són nocturns, i quan tu els veus estan dormint en el tronc d'algun arbre. No els vaig veure moure's ni un mil·límetre. Malgrat tot, considero que va ser el bimbo més guapo que vaig fer a Singapur.
Malayan colugo
Can you see the arms of this fellow? Can you see its hind limbs or its tail? Probably not. They are covered in a thin skin membrane that allows colugos to launch themselves into the air and cross the rain forest gliding in the night. It must be spectacular to see one in action. I wasn't so lucky. Even though they have their eyes open, they are supposed to be sleeping.
Calau becfalçat oriental (Anthracoceros albirostris)
Molta gent confon els calaus amb els tucans. Els tucans viuen a Amèrica, no estan emparentats amb els calaus i no tenen cap "banya" addicional al bec. A Singapur vaig veure aquest calau i a Papua vaig veure el calau de Nova Guinea, tots dos molt espectaculars.
Oriental pied hornbill
Does anybody know what pied means? It means black and white. Although I think you will agree with me that the most prominent feature of this bird is not its colours, but the fact that it looks like it has two bills!

La fredeluga emmascarada la vaig bimbar sense baixar de l'avió!! A l'aeroport de Popondetta (Papua Nova Guinea) n'hi havia dues a la gespa, i amb l'avió encara en marxa i sense prismàtics la vaig identificar (perquè és un ocell inconfusible, encara que no l'hagis vist mai). Aquesta foto, però, la vaig fer al poble d'Innisfail, a Austràlia.
Masked lapwing
I ticked this lifer without getting off the plane!! At Popondetta Airport (Papua New Guinea) there were two masked lapwings on the grass, and with the plane still in motion and no binoculars I was able to identify it (because it's an unmistakable bird, even if you've never seen it before). I took this photo, however, in Australia, in the town of Innisfail.

Els torlits tenen una bis còmica, no trobeu? No només m'ho sembla a mi: en alguns indrets de Catalunya i Occitània se l'anomena Xarlot! I, personalment, l'espècie australiana encara em fa més gràcia que l'europea.

They say "bush", but I saw a couple of them walking on the pavement, at night, in the middle of cities like Townsville or Darwin!

Southern cassowary
If it only lives in the north of Australia, why is it called southern cassowary? Because in Papua New Guinea there are two more species of them, which I sadly didn't manage to see.

Carnisser flautista (Gymnorhina tibicen)
El nom és genial. M'agradaria saber si en tota la història hi ha hagut algun carnisser que a més a més fos flautista.
Lo de carnisser li ve del nom en anglès d'altres ocells de la seva família (butcherbird) i lo de flautista pel seu cant.
As a European, I have to say that this bird doesn't bring a magpie to mind at all. All they have in common is their colours, their abundance and their size. Well, that's quite a lot indeed.

Un petit rapinyaire crestat al que, poc després de fer-li la foto, vaig veure caçar un ocellet i treure-li les plomes. Brutal.

I don't understand the concept of calling pacific a bird of prey, however small. Right, from the Pacific Ocean you mean, OK.

Després de menjar-me un ou ferrat d'emú davant de càmera (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFjgxIMNuj0), em quedava veure'l "in the wild" (això no té traducció fàcil al català... a la naturalesa, en llibertat, en el seu hàbitat). Missió acomplerta.

Als afores d'Alice Springs hi ha un turonet ple de roques on hi vaig veure tot de ualabis (ualabi és el nom que reben les espècies més petites de cangurs). Tot i ser molt espantadissos (de seguida que t'hi acostes fugen saltant), vaig aconseguir fer-los algunes fotos. Entre elles la que, per a mi, és la millor foto que vaig fer en tot el viatge.

Anhinga asiàtica (Anhinga melanogaster)
D'anhingues (me n'he d'assabentar si aquesta ena hac es pronuncia com una ena o com una enya, com a caipirinha, ja us ho diré) en vaig veure forces i potser en tinc fotos més guapes que aquesta, però aquesta anhinga em va fer gràcia per la seva gran coherència: prenia el sol en unes plaques solars!

When darters and cormorants have their wings in this position they are sunbathing to get dry. Well, this one was sunbathing on top of solar (solar comes from Sol, which is Catalan for Sun) panels!

Near Darwin, a city named after the discoverer of Evolution, I took the photo of this raptor. I dedicate this picture to the greatest naturalist of all times.
